Join us at King’s College London on 10 May at 18:00 for the launch of the London Principles for Academic Freedom.
These principles have been developed by the London Universities’ Council for Academic Freedom (LUCAF) in consultation with their members and define a consensus view of the basic principles of academic freedom.
The principles draw together existing frameworks and resources on academic freedom. They do not seek to provide a novel framework, quite the contrary. They draw together key points in a concise and general statement, underscoring the central planks necessary for a university culture which upholds and promotes academic freedom.

There is considerable current debate about the meaning, nature, importance of and limits to academic freedom, including how it relates to freedom of expression. This interest and debate has been heightened in the UK by recent legislation on the Higher Education Freedom of Speech Act, as well as by prominent cases of disruption of cancellation of speakers by those with opposing views. This event, organized in collaboration with the LSE Academic Freedom network and hosted by the LSE Department of Social Policy and LSE Law School, is aimed at those who wish to learn more about the topic, to introduce a specific perspective from an eminent speaker, with direct practical experience of the topic, and to provide the opportunity for questions and discussion.
